Red lump on hen's foot!!!!! Photo now added
« on: May 18, 2010, 07:33 »
Hi,

Yesterday, I noticed that one of my black rock hens is slightly unsteady on her left foot. I picked her up and saw that she has a big redish lump on her foot. The lump is quite squashy.
I'm not sure how long she's had the lump for.
She has been behaving normally, eating and drinking fine, but has grown a lot more scared since when we first got her.
She is around 24 weeks old.

Any advice is welcome  :)

She may have something stuck in it, a thorn, tiny bit of gravel maybe? It could even be bumblefoot. Its an infection that is caused by bacteria that gets in when the pad on the foot becomes damaged. Does the foot look swolen, or feel hot? I would go to the vets as if it is bumblefoot she will need antibiotic injections.

agree with Lizzie so perhaps a trip to the vets is needed.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thank you  :)
The hen's foot isn't swollen, but the toe with the lump is. I think it's possibly bumblefoot  :(
I'm going to buy some food for my chickens tomorrow, so I will take some photos to the chicken expert there and see what he thinks and if she needs to see a vet.

I'm not sure if it is bumblefoot or not .

Here's a photo of the lump and would be interested if anyone can tell by looking at this photo, what it is.

Thanks  :)

It's not bumblefoot....that happens at the bottom of the foot. To me it looks like and abcess. Try lancing it....under the scales.... and giving it a gently squeeze.....if there is pus and blood clean it up and put some purple spray on it.
