I got 3 new chickens yesterday (11 week old Rhode Islands) and when I came home today one of them has a broken toe - it is bent  at a 90 degree angle and theres no movement in it.  I can post a picture if it helps.

What should I do.....  please dont say vets £110 vet bills this month :(

Avoid fruit and nuts.  You are what you eat.

You could try splinting it into the right shape for a week or two, or you could leave it but  either way, the bird will be fine.

Are you sure that its a recent break? if it isn't, it could be a deformity from birth, in which case, you can forget the first idea.

8) HI, If the bird is walking OK and if it's eating ond drinking OK, then you have nothing to worry about. If it's standing only on it's good leg and looking misserable the kind thing to do is put it down. You can eat chickens you know!   swede

sorry for the delay in reply - was up to 3am preparing for my sons 3rd birthday party today - those toddlers party hard!

The bird is walking on it okay.  I cant be certain that it wasnt already like that but I certernally dont remember seeing it and the breeder pulled its legs taught and inspected them infront of me and said 'always inspect legs thoroughly when you are buying new birds'.

If i feel it, how will I tell between a deformity and a break?  My dad is a qualified first aider and would be able to help me splint it if it needed.

[/quote] If the poor chuk is deformed it's best left alone It will be as happy as Larry providing you keep feeding it. If the toe is lifeless it will start to rot and cause a problem by folding down under the foot. If that happens it will have to come off. I hope it's deformed; the chuk can live with that. swede

I have added a photo taken yesterday.  Today the joint has blue tinge, so I assuming it is a break.  I am also pretty certain both toes are broke.

Are they movable ? Can you straighten the toes to strap them ?  That would help to maintain good circulation.
