Things to do ................
« on: January 23, 2011, 09:42 »
There have been lots of posts asking what peeps can start sowing/planting and for most of us it is really far to early to start. So some ideas to keep us all going and save time when good planting weather comes.

Tidying out sheds and greenhouses (if not done in the autumn).
Wash and disinfect your pots.
Looking at your plot/garden and really planning what you are going to put and where.
If you have flower beds at home - give then a good tidy up now - saves good veggie growing time later on.
Power hose or brush paths if they are dirty from all of the snow we had in December.
Finish winter digging when soil permits.

Any other suggestions.

Count your seeds again.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

We will be making two or three more raised beds in the next week or so.

Use this quiet time to work through some of the diy jobs at home which have been lined up for you to do. That way, you don't need quite so many excuses to slope off to the plot.

No chance of finding a decent tv prog, so find a good book (doesn't have to be a gardening one ;) ) and read it ideally sitting next to a nice warm fire.
Spring will arrive when it's ready :)

Wash and disinfect your pots.

the cheap toilet brushes from the pound shop are good for this. I was trying to think how to fit 2 pointing up in a bowl so you could clean 2 pots at a time...perhaps I should get out more ???

Have been doing a lot of that MOS - winter is my favourite time for reading. Not really a TV fan.

Another thought - get to know this website - have a look at the growing help section, there is a lot of good advice there. And if you are into cooking what about the recipes section.

I do all my gardening/digging/cleaning of greenhouses and moving of fruit bushes (if needed) in October/November, which then leaves me free time to:-

1.  Get prepared for Christmas; :)
2.  Have a break between Christmas and New Year - usually go for a night in a really nice posh hotel where I'm pampered with evening dinner and next morning a cooked breakfast and then visit the local town to do some possible shopping; :D
3. Plant onion seeds;
4. Start looking at holiday brochures in January and booking camp sites in France, and visiting the NEC Camping, Caravan show in February; :D :D
5. Then its back to the allotment in ernest and getting my seedlings prepared.

I just love this time of year. :tongue2:
