Onions flowering

I have some Setton Onions that are starting to swell but also getting tall with flower heads forming. As I am a first time onion grower is this normal ?

Yes its normal, and no, you don't want them on.  Pick them off.  They take the goodness out of your onion.  Personally, its a job I absolutely love.  When I pass someone's plot on the allotment site, and there are onions in flower, I go and pick them off.  I can't resist.  If there are any onion growers out there, I'd love a job :D

Onions going to seed is an indication that the ground is getting too dry. I am watering my onions on each visit to the allotment.

The flower stalk will enlarge and become round. The onion will not store too well and these will be the first to eat.

How low down do you pick off the flower spike. I've been pulling the top flower bud end off and the stalk seems to have continue to grow, and they all have fat necks that look like theyll never dry out as a result. >:(

Should i have been cutting the flower spike off near to the bulb?

Please don't do that - it's trespass and some of us grow onions and keep them all winter just for the seed - it is an ignorant and stupid thing to do.

If you want to do that to onions, do it to your own.
