Quail query :( sad one :(
« on: September 04, 2009, 20:09 »
I went out to my japanese quail tonight to discover that the hens have pecked out the male birds eyes

He was swiftly despatched by my husband who is able to do this quickly with a professional tool.

Now these quail have been together for 2 years with virtually no problems at all..... one other hen was a bit beaten up but once we took her out all was well again.

Does anyone know why they would have suddenly done this.... it was truly upsetting and I am now not sure what to do with them.  I did pop them in with another couple of birds to see what happened and they turned on the new cock bird again..... I did manage to get him out though before they took his eyes out too.

I am really sad that my lovely quartet of breeding quail have now been ruined and very sad for the poor boy that died.

Any ideas???
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

Thanks Joyfull..... I am gutted..... Elroy was a great boy.... pretty tame in quail terms too.

I am scared to put any other birds in with them now incase they do the same to them.

To be honest, chickens sorting out the pecking order has nothing on what they did to him  :(

I can't help either chookie, sorry. Just wanted to say how sad it is, so sorry for your poor little man  :(
Thank heavens for your hubby, being able to end his suffering quickly & humanely.
Hope someone with quail can help you soon. But no, don't think I'd trust those two around eyes again either - maybe they have the taste for it now?     :tongue2:

Luckily OH is very handy and brave :(  He shoots and so has a despatch tool which is so quick that the bird would not know what had happened :(

Thanks for your hugs  :)

I used to keep quail, but I have never had this happen, only with males attacking other males.
