Do leeks continue to grow during winter?
« on: November 06, 2008, 12:57 »
May be a silly question, i know they are alright to remain in the soil until next spring, but will they actually still put on growth.

I ask, because mine are still a bit scutty at the moment.

Thanks in advance
Liv.

They will grow very slowly over Winter and if we get a milder spell they'll grow a bit faster. :)

Thanks for that.

Better than no growth at all i suppose.

Vegmandan, had a good browse through your blog last night.

Great to someone else set up in detail. What a lovely spot you live in too.

Below about 6 degrees Celsius most stuff stops putting much growth on but we have had warmer than that even at night this last week or so, so they will be growing.

PS - mine are belters this year (sorry couldn't help myself  )

What if they were in the polytunnel Dan?  I never got around to putting mine in as the poultry takes up too much of my day and mine are still in the greenhouse, but will they do anything if I put them in the polytunnel???

I've no idea really as I've never grown leeks in my tunnel.

They'll grow quicker due to the warmer conditions but might bolt quicker too.

I know my Spring Cabbages grew like hell in the polytunnel over winter once then bolted ,so I suppose Leeks may be similar.

Just got to pick 'em before they bolt. :?

I'd guess they'd bolt too.

One of the advantages of leeks is that they will sit outside for months & months, doing practically nothing, giving you a bountiful supply.

But come the warmer weather in March - woooooshhhh!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Mine have been in since about July and are still not very big. Thought that would be it for them and was going to put them in soup. Do you think I could leave them and they will still grow then? Thanks
