Autumn Crown Squash.
« on: November 29, 2010, 13:14 »
Hi I am a convert to growing squash for winter storage and use.
The soups and stews that I have made with butternut squash and Crown Prince added have been great.

I have come across a 'new' variety of squash called Autumn Crown which is a mix of BNS and Crown Prince

Has anyone grown them if so what are they like?

Thanks FB

I think that was the variety we grew this year.  Not the most prolific we have grown with about 4 fruits per plant.  That said they were a good average size and very nice texture.

This variety had been previously sold as "Squashkin" for the last two years by the only supplier, and has now been renamed for some reason, now that it is available from more that one supplier.
I have grown it for the last two years, and would describe it as similar in taste and texture to a butternut, but with the shape of Crown Prince. It sets fruit and ripens about a month before butternuts, but not as soon as its parent, Crown Prince. Keeps till early Summer. It has a lot of usable flesh.
