No germination with courgettes
« on: April 19, 2014, 08:21 »
I planted 8 courgette seeds.8 days later it s a no show so I delved down and checked out the seeds. No change whatsoever . They are from a packet I used last year, exp date august 2014. What should I do? I have had this problem before and resorted to buying plantlets online.

Where did you sow them - indoors, in the warm?

They're unlikely to germinate at a soil temperature of less than 15C - optimum is around 25C.

They haven't rotted, so probably not over-watered - could the compost have been kept too dry?

Bad storage conditions can affect the viability of any seed, especially when near the end of its theoretical shelf-life.

I've not sown any squashes or cukes here yet - plenty of time to sow some fresh seed if you think it's the seed itself which could be the problem.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I usually put mine in damp kitchen roll inside a plastic bag.  Leave for few days in a warm dark place, and pot them up when they've sprouted.  :)

8 days is still a bit early to expect them to be through./. sometimes can take 3 weeks if temps etc are not right!!

Good idea. I think I'll try that this year. Just need to remember that I've done it and where I put them.

My first 8 took about 3 weeks to germinate, I thought they weren't going to do anything so sowed another 12 seeds. They all have germinated and I now have 20 strong courgette plants. Thankfully I've managed to convince several plot holders that they want to rehome several. I like courgette but 20 may be OTT!

I think you'd need to be feeding an army with 12 plants. There was one person on here who grew something like 100+ plants every year

Slightly off topic but speaking of mass growing there is an old boy who rents/owns a massive what looks like a greenhouse on a industrial estate he grows hundreds and hundreds of tomato plants in there every year.

Rumour has it he doesn't eat or sell them.. weird

I was planning on growing several courgette plants, but my primary aim with them is to provide ground cover for the beans, the fruit is secondary. I haven't sown any yet as my house is on the cool side according to the seed packet (it says 23C minimum for germination). Trouble is the weather seems to have reverted back to March  ::) so they are not going to be sown until mid May at this rate.
