Organic or not organic the truth at last.
« on: February 28, 2008, 00:37 »
If you grow veg on your own allotment or in your own garden and you grow the old varieties in an organic way, you will not only eat less chemicals you will also benifit from getting more vitamins and minerals by far then shop and supermarket ones.
They have after a series of tests shown that the older types of veg grown in the old ways actually absorb far more goodness from the soil PER pound than the latest plants and FI hy-breds.

So although there are just as many vits/mins in the soil as there ever were , modern veg just does not take it up as efficiently.
If you grow the older favourites in a non-organic way then you are still going to get the benifit of the available vits/mins in the soil.

Its the fact that modern veg grows too quickly and pound for pound the old veg contains more heathy vits/mins at point of harvest taking longer to get to its picking size.
So organic or not ,growing your own and letting it take a little longer and not growing F1-hybreds will still be the best and healthest way.
Some poor village is missing its Idiot
plus officially the longest ever occupier of the naughty step.

That's fascinating. Makes perfect logical sense too.

And of course freshness is also a key consideration. I still maintain you haven't eaten carrots until you eat your own home/allotment grown ones.
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

Real Seeds specialise in non hybrid veg seeds, you also get the added benefit of being able to save seed to grow on the following year

I grew old fashioned parsnips last year - Hollow Crown - 26 pence packet from Wilko.  blooming fab they were too so growing them this year. They are a Victorian one I think

Heritage varieties (old ones) were often developed for flavour rather than yield / storage / consistent ripening for machine harvesting but hybrid vigour is well known.
Some modern varieties around have more anti-oxidents than old ones and can be said to be better for you.
Nothing is simple!
I'm not 100% organic but organic growing is definitely better for the environment and I prefer organic produce (if buying) because of the reduced pesticide residues.

Apparently 40% of conventionally grown veg in the shops have detectable residues and 3% of the relatively low number tested  are over the legal limit.

I believe the danger lies in the cocktail effect. A little of this poison does you no harm and a little of that won't hurt you but mix the two together and you have a problem

I'm sure someone on here has the maths to prove what I know (long time since I did stats and factors) but it's practically impossible to test all the potential cocktails.

Ask yourself (punk) "Do I feel lucky?"

I`d agree with the cocktail effect. Not only lots of different chemicals on food , but a build up over time in our bodies. I like food to be as nature sells it, not how a processing plant sells it.
Politicians are like nappies - they need changing for the same reason

I read the reports in 2 or 3 mags and I forget which but they were upto date gardening ones. They did say who why etc, but I had to dash off before I took note of the source's.

I will try to find them and post when I do.

Look for "heritage seeds" they are sold in a great many outlets, also pop into any charity shop and pick up some old gardening books. Ignore all the advice on chemicals, and just look at the varities they recomend.  Most will still be available.

I found heritage sources online simply by searching for heritage seeds in Canada. I get in mail orders across the country with reasonable postage charges as the growers are more keen to spread good varieties than earn huge incomes.

Was reading Victorian Kitchen Garden today while I waited for my car to be repaired    and the author tells of a place in the UK that has small gene pools of many many heritage seeds and tubers. But they're kept for breeding purposes as the old ones have many good qualities that aren't in new varieties. Must look that up again if anyone's interested.
