hi ive been told that turnips will not grow on our allotment, by all the regulars, our soil is dark and heavy and will grow anything except turnips, is there a secret to growing turnips as i would to prove them all wrong.

they dont like heavy soil so put loads of sand and compost in  to lighten the clay or heavy loam up ,then sow . mark a bed specifically for next year and throw old growbags and any other sand compost in it rotavate it or dig it in really well :wink:

Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
