Newbie - can someone tell me what this is?
« on: April 04, 2012, 21:51 »
Hello all,

I am new here, and I've just started growing a few things, (just strawberries and spring/salad onions).

I planted the supermarket green onion bottoms which seems to be growing well.
However, I got this at the top of one of them (see the picture).

I am just wondering what the bit at the top of the green onion is.

What do I do? will it contain seeds or something?

Thanks. I'm not really sure what to do with it. I usually just take cuttings from my spring onions but I didn't from this one.

I'm sorry. Cuttings from spring onions?

I think you'd better expand on that!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi H2o!
Do I understand you planted spring onions bought from the supermarket? Have I got that right or am I wrong (again!)
Growing spring onions will not produce onions. They are different types of allium. The spring onions will grow a bit then go into flowering mode, as seen in your pic. This takes the goodness from the bulb.
I really don't think they'll get any bigger.....
Is this right DD?

By cuttings I meant cut the green part of the spring onions so that I can use for cooking etc. I read that if I plant supermarket spring onion bottoms (the white part), I could get endless supply of spring onions I.e. it will keep growing at least for six months or more. I've been doing this for a few months now, they regrow quite fast after I cut off what I need. It's just I was curious what this bud was.

I'm not interested in onions, just spring onions, I love them.  :)

I didn't start from seeds as I didnt get round to go shops yet.
I will buy some eventually when I get more planting space :)

Does it mean this spring onion that is about to flower, is finished?  Time to remove I guess.

Yes, flower means its coming to an end as all the juices go up to grow the flower bud. if your keen you can harvest the seeds from the flower once it starts to die down and grow those but there is no guarantee they will disease free.

I think you need to buy seeds like this:

Bunching onion

Once established, you should never need to buy or sow again.

I moved mine about three weeks ago, as they were in one of the beds potatoes were going in. They have been going now for three years  :D

Not sure if you can buy them as plants, you may have to grow from seed.
