carrots
« on: September 30, 2010, 10:12 »
did mine in raiosed beds this year and haven't had a single carrot fly hole in any of them. Beds are only about a foot high. Is that too high for the fly or was I just lucky?

The recommended height is 24", but whilst they can't fly high, they can get blown over.

I used a 24" barrier with reasonable effect for a few years, but the last two I switched to a total cover with Enviromesh. Not seen a single one since.

It could of course just be that there aren't any around your area!

They say that the carrot fly cant fly abover around 2 or 3 foot, however, this doesnt mean to say that the wind or a slight breeze cant blow them up onto your carrots, if i was you, i wouldnt be too bothered about how high your bed is, but if you do want to protectt hem next year use something like enviromesh or a fleece :)

I grow 3 x 32' rows of carrots, so that solution is not practicable for me!

I grow them in baths every year as our ground is too stony, never had carrot fly.
