Reasons to keep chickens on allotment?
« on: August 15, 2007, 13:20 »
hello all, this is my first time on the site, and i have only just taken over a allotment, and to be honest have no clue to what im doing, although i do have bags of enthusiasm!!
I was wanting to keep chickens but the rules on the allotment seem to be quite strick, there are house's  near by, and no one else keeps them, i was going to write to the owners to ask for permission to keep a 2-3.
can someone give me some advice on advantages of keeping chickens, and is it possible to buy chickens that dont make loads of noise? ect... i think this may be there main argument against me keeping them.
sorry if this is a stupid question but please humour me with some responces. many thanks for your time Sam  :  )

Best bet is have a look in your tenancy agreement unless it states in there that you can't keep chooks then they would have trouble stopping you. A friendly letter to the owner (I take it its a private site not council then) is worth it. If it's a council site look on your council website and see if the plots are designated livestock If so you're off to a good start

Best of Luck

Hi Sam welcome to the site  :D

For some info on sites and livestock try This pdf download. available on the Allotments Regeneration Initiative site.

It might prove useful.
