Title: Very Early Muscari
Post by: bendipa on October 13, 2011, 19:48
I planted out some bulbs a month ago, and the leaves have already  poked through the soil surface way too early. I wouldn't have expected this until January.

Am I going to lose all the flowers come spring?

I shouldn't have thought they'll come to any damage.

No, don't worry they are always the first thing up in my garden and leaves are about 5-6 ins tall already  :D

Mine are almost as advanced. I've never seen Muscari show themselves this early before. I can only put it down to the abnormal mild temperatures we've been having throughout September and half of October, so far. But surely if the developing flower buds become suddenly exposed to the hard frosts to come, that will damage/destroy the flowers?

Same here. Mine are all up and in November the hard frosts will knock them back. I never worry as they're very tough and will come back in spring.

I planted some in a hanging basked with violas only 3 weeks ago and they are already 2 inches high.  another sign of the weird weather this year maybe?
