Oooh yum.
I grew a batch from seed 6 years ago, and the descendants are still in my garden. Every couple of years I separate out the offsets and plant these out in their own right.

Up until now I've never had space to grow as many as I want, so I'll be planting out all the offsets come spring, in my lovely new (hopefully dug by then) allotment!

This year we had 2 productive plants in a small space, so not a huge crop but they were lovely with melted butter.  My elder daughter's favourite food!

Happy artichoking!
Penny  :D
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

The first time I tried them was in a Pizza restaurant in Manchester.  They looked to me at the time to look like mushrooms.  They were on my boss's plate and he had put them to one side and I just asked him if he didn't like mushrooms, and he said they were artichokes, and that he didn't like them.  I asked if I could taste one, which I did, and its my very first time that I actually spat them out on my plate :tongue2:.  They were absolutely disgusting.  Do you think I should try them differently?  Are there different ways to cook them?

Babs: as far as cooking is concerned: very easy:  bbc recipe

Make some sauce: liquid cream with just enough vinegar (wine if poss) to curdle the cream and make it tangy. Add some salt and pepper.

Shake out all the water from the artichoke, then just nibble the juicey bits of the leaves with the sauce.

Same for the base (but watch out for the hairy bit).

Mmmmmmmmmm

Sorry tode, but I could put a full bottle of wine and/or vinegar in it, and I don't think it would kill the taste :D

Well, I tried        :D

I don't like courgettes.  Or pumkins.  Even with, as you say, a bottle of
wine/sauce/whatever         :D  :D
