What size paper pot for sweetcorn?
« on: April 21, 2008, 23:47 »
I've just started some sweetcorn seeds chitting and plan to put them into Rich's paper pots.

I've made up some general pots for other plants but should I make extra tall ones for the sweetcorn and if so how tall?

The ones I've made so far are 2 to 2.5" in width and about 4" tall.

It's been a while since I grew sweetcorn (never bothered with chitting either :?). But I think you could probably get away with the pot size you're already using, thought slightly deeper might be good. The main things with sweetcorn are:

1. It's a relatively tall crop, so it might need a good root system for it to remain stable, hence the deeper pot. (staking/ pea sticks might be useful as they get bigger too).

2. They're hungry! REALLY hungry! so a good amount of manure and other fertiliser ("Gromore" if you're not a chemical free gardener, or Blood, Flish and Bone if you are) will help massively at planting out time, along with plenty of water throughout the season.

And finally...

C! Don't forget to grow them in a "square". Sweetcorn are wind polinated, and a group of them in a square is more likely to yield a better crop than a row.

Good luck!
Stu

I sow mine into similar height but wider pots but don't transplant, just straight out. 8)

The roots are starting to come through the sides of my paper pots and it's a good three weeks until I can plant them out. Will they be ok?

Thats what happens with paper pots or loo rolls.. Just be carefull when taking them out as the bottom section just breaks away.. I'm using modules this year instead..

They also like loads of nitrogen as you will see from Johns article on "Articles & Advice" on the main site.

But still relevant today...

I use double pages from the "free" tv magazine that comes with Saturday`s newspaper, which are 21 inches x13 inches. They are folded in half the opposite way to which they were originally, and wrapped around a Coke can to make a pot 4 inches tall by 2.5 inches diameter.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?
