I grew artichokes from seed last year (green globe) and out of all the plants only a couple produced globes last year.  There were a few plants that were noticably better than the others and they are already looking strong this year so I'll probably use the offshoots to replace some not so strong plants.  They generally don't produce until the following year but one thing I would do is prepare the soil well for their final growing positions and give them plenty of compost, manure and maybe some extra fertiliser to really get them going. That will make the difference and will ensure good strong plants for the following year. In terms of sowing, I sowed and grew them on indoors before hardening them off and planting outside.  They develop quite large roots so they need to get planted out as soon as they look big enough.

Only if it's perennial though. There are F1 annual seeds available now, too.

These will be all uniformly producing for the first season.

Easy to grow and they look a picture  :D   Each year mine topples over under the weight of the chokes, and it's not fed.  Just bung it back in and tread it down

Got some of the purple headed  Romanesco ones so going to start from fresh as my plant is donkeys years old.
