Asparagus crowns
« on: May 02, 2013, 20:23 »
I planted a couple of asparagus crowns in October last year, followed instructions etc with regards to depth, plenty of well-rotten manure and spreading out the roots, but there's absolutely no sign of life! I know it's been a very cold spring but thought there should be something making an appearance by now?

Any ideas what I've done wrong?

I did the same and mine are just showing.

Dont think you did anything wrong.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

WF is almost certainly right; could you add your general location to your forum profile in case there's anything climate-specific to your location which we can advise on?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

OK, thanks for your replies - I've got a lot more confidence in them now!  :)

I live in Lancashire, and it has been quite chilly here up until the last couple of days, so fingers crossed they might poke through soon!  :D

Mine were new at the start of last year and most (21 out of 24) grew. There's no sign of them yet this year. It's just a slow start this year.

I was down at the plot yesterday. The first spears of year two have appeared. I now need to find something to do for the next six weeks so I don't try and take any. ::)
