Growing Purple & Globe artichokes
« on: May 06, 2013, 00:16 »
Artichokes are one of my favourite vegetables and I would love to grow them.
Either the above or any other variety suitable for planting now ?
From seed or any other way ?
Directly into soil or potted first ?
Thanks

P S I had planted  some seeds directly into the soil last year, nothing came out !!!!!!

They start easily from seed in little pots, then plant them out when they are big enough. You are not supposed to harvest in the first year though to let the plant establish. I grew both green and purple from seed last year.
The only problem is, that, I have read many times that plants grown from seed can be of variable quality,so it may be a question of growing more than you want, then thin to keep only the best. I have not yet been able to establish exactly how 'the quality may vary' - I think it may be something as simple as some being more spiney than others. The best way to get a good plant  is to propagate from a plant you know to be good by taking a root division in the autumn. :)
