Am I too late for sowing for winter?
« on: June 19, 2009, 21:11 »
I am keen to have a good over winter harvest this year.
So I have planted some Kale, and chard but also want some black kale and PSB which isn't planted yet. the Kale and chard is at seedling 3" stage.
I want them to be full size for the winter so I can harvest over the wintertime.
so can I still grow the black kale from seed or do I need to buy plants on ebay??

Hi louby  :)
I'm not sure to be honest but if your buying in Kale or any other brassicas make sure they come from a reputable source, as it's so easy to bring in club root that way  :(

Hi louby, if you have some seed, why not put some in and give it a go. What does it say on the packet?

I sowed my cavolo nero and purple sprouting broccoli yesterday.  According to my books that was about right, perhaps even a little early.

Cheers,

I have already put out a row of kale I can harvest from November but after looking at the seed packet you are ok to sow as late as July. Think I might start some more of then in pots and plant them out August-September'ish when as holes are left by cabbage harvest. :)

PSB have just been sowed, my kales are still wrapped up in their vacum sleeping bag until begining of August, I have to many tasty brassicas at the moment so don't bother with the Kales until later.

Thanks all, I decided to buy seed and sow that, thanks for warning Rich about clubroot, I think you are right, not worth the risk, especially as there is time to sow.

I have bought some black tuscany seed from ebay and have PSB seed anyway.

I sowed some brassicas and chard last year in August Aidy, but they didn't get big enough to harvest over the winter it had a great head start in the spring and we have only just stopped eating it after bolting, but I want full sized plants to eat through the winter so I will sow now.

Thankyou,

BTW does anyone else find that the cabbage whites don't seem to like the curly kale so much? nor the chard, my seedlings are quite big now (8") and not any damage, a few white flies/moth things, but no caterpillars or eggs. last year the PSB was just small sticks in the ground after I forgot to cover them!
