Quick green manure crop?
« on: March 29, 2008, 20:32 »
I have space waiting for courgette plants, which should be ready for
planting out some time in June.

Rather than leave it empty, is there a green manure crop which will
fill the gap?  I already have catch crops growing elsewhere so I thought
green manure to be dug in might be good for the soil...

thanks D.

I used mustard last autumn and that seemed pretty quick to grow, easy to dig back in too.

I think you need a bit more time for it to rot down in the soil though.

Otherwise you'll be planting your courgettes on top of a load of freshly dug in green manure plants.

I may be completely wrong though. :D

No your right vegmandan you need to dig it in about a month before the ground is used I think.

I turn in mustard and plant straight away. Its very fast growing and great for the soil.

Thanks all! I'm new here and this forum is great  :)

Mustard seems the way to go then, I think I know where I can buy some
to start me off - perhaps then collect some seed for more.

I'll dig it in, then I always dig out a small pit for courgettes and put in
compost to plant in. By the time the plants have got going the bed
should be fine.

Result!  Many thanks D.

I get mine from a farm supplier and I get the organic stuff. I think it comes from suttons but I would also try Moles seeds on the web.
Just had look and Moles have a good selection of green manures.
