Only got four parsnips left :(
« on: February 04, 2024, 15:19 »
Luckily they’re huge.  Nothing special done to them, in fact they were pretty much ignored after poor germination and I planted some early cauliflower right next to them. Bit of canker to cut out, but at 1.7 Kg, it’ll make a few meals.

Used the last of mine as they were starting to regrow. Centres a bit woody but just cut them out.
They were all self seeded from a parsnip that flowered last spring so a bonus crop.

Nice! This was the biggest I've pulled yet, just under 1.5kg. The big ones suffer from canker a bit, I've found the ones I sow a bit later in early june don't suffer but they are noticeably smaller

Thought I’d get the rest of mine up yesterday & was surprised how many there were still, some good straight ones too

Just had a third meal from it and still plenty left. Really surprised by how good it was, no sign of any woodyness and lovely and sweet. Might dig up the remaining ones and freeze before they start sprouting.

Wonderful reports of the parsnip season from y'all. And the specimen from Nobbie certainly answers an earlier season question of mine....I am truly gobsmacked by the 1.7kg that his weighed in at, and still proved to be good eating.

Yes that’s what I’m doing with most of those I got up, there are still a few to get up but as it’s set to get colder in the next few days I’ll wait til that passes & get the rest up then, I can then prepare the ground for the next crop

I thinkbive still got a dozen left in the ground which unfortunately have started to re-grow, I'll take them all out this week and use what I can!

Had you manured (or similar) the bed before sowing / planting?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It's usually recommended to avoid manuring the bed where carrots or parsnips will grow that season.

After parsnips four days in a row I forgot about the remaining ones at the allotment until last week when I went up to dig some leeks. Found they had started to sprout new leaves, not surprising given the warm weather so I dug them all up and to my surprise they are still great eating even in mid March.
