How high will my beans grow please?
« on: May 25, 2007, 13:59 »
I have just bought a packet of Suttons Dwarf French Bean Borlotto Firetongue. There is no indication of growth height on the packet. Have looked at a couple of websites and found no further height info.

Has anyone here grown these? How high to do they get please?

I did find this link which caused further confusion..
borlotto Firetongue climbing

The ones on this link look the same in the photo but are just described as climbers. I'm a tad confused.

Do I just grow my seeds up a wig wam ala runner beans?

Thanks

If the ones in the link are the ones you are growing then 5 feet plus depending on your canes, I am growing these this year, you could of course nip the growing tip out at whatever height you want and get them to bush.

What is confusing is the fact that there seems to be a Borlotto Firetongue dwarf and a Borlotto Firetongue climber. Does that seem right to you?

I wish I knew how big these dwarf ones will get. 1ft 2ft 3ft? Some indication on the packet would have been nice.

Guess I will have to ask them after all.

I'd be suprised if a dwarf bean got over 1ft in height.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

yep as digger says, think as drawf sutton broad beans are around 12 inches high as are drawf french beans, so if it says drawf on the packet it should be 12 inches or so.

If they call them dwarf they won't be 5 ft tall

I'm trying these this year - 'Purple Teepee'. The beans are borne ABOVE the leaves, so they should be easier to see when harvesting & less back breaking. (Theory!).
