Do beans grow clockwise?
« on: March 26, 2008, 11:38 »
Just planting out my runners which I have started in "Richies paper pots" in the polytunnel.  they are between 6" and 1foot.  I am tying the larger ones in as it is quite a windy garden but dont want to send them twining the wrong way

I'm sure one of you knowledgeable lot out there can tell me.  Ta

Anticlockwise - just checked on one of my photos.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for that.  I'll try anticlockwise 'cos I dont think I am in the southern hemisphere.  I really cannot believe how lucky I am Jen.  I dreamed of retiring here but didn't really think I would be able to but here I am - mind you the euro could be better - just have to tighten my belt a bit more (need to lose some more weight anyway)

I think beans curl round because the cells that are in contact with the pole slow down their growth while those on the outside grow at usual speed.  Can't see them being too fussed about clockwisedness.  But I am usually wrong.

Not usually, but this time, I think, yes, they do wind around a different direction, South and North hemisphere, I think that's true. And they will wind only one definite way of those too, just try to unwind them or wind them thewrong way around, they will all come off the stick, however hard you try.

Thanks Gobs.  I'm probably half right as something has to trigger the cells to form a spiral and a dim and distant memory from school say's it's a reaction to stimuli, eg touch.  Otherwise they wouldn't be able to differentiate between a thin cane and a thick post.  (such as this one)

This is not necessarily so. Climbers climb in the direction dictated by the gene or whatever. Some plants will go one way and some the other. The sensible thing to do is look to see which way a plant is trying to coil and assist it to continue in the same direction.
