Potato Advice
« on: April 30, 2012, 19:04 »
Hi everyone,

I got hold of this:

in January, and I've finally got it cleared:

I want to get something in the ground in the bottom bed while I get on with the rest.

Just a couple of questions:

Am I too late to plant unchitted potatoes ?
Does anyone have any recommendations on fertilisers and the like going forward this season as I go ?
What else could I try planting as we're now May 1st ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

James

No get some potatoes in now if you're going to plant them. It should be OK to sow things like parsnips and beetroot now too. :)

that's good work there and soil looks like good quality  8). April/May is good time to start sowing your seeds in pots.

fertilizer wise i use groworganic either scatter it over the plot or let it steep in hot water and then dilute it with plain water and use that as liquid feed once plants have grown. if you have any nettles left over you can make nitrogen liquid feed from that or fancy growing comfrey and again make liquid feed from that which will contain a good balance of NPK. just leave the stuff in water and let it break down and it will smell foul.

I love the red Dorset soil, it looks good stuff  :)

Blood Fish & Bone is the organic equivalent of Growmore, which you'll probably need this year while you get your compost heap sorted out, and also find out where to get manure ready for the winter.

As for sowing you can start any hardy veg off now, wait a couple of weeks before starting tender crops outside.
This sowing and harvest chart is useful ;)

Good Luck!

That looks great cloudcooking -- well done for such a massive effort  :D

The sowing chart Muomofstig linked to will help a lot.

Just be aware that it is easier to manage in the future if you group plants together that are roughly the same families ie cabbage types together, root crops together etc as this makes it easier next year when you can then avoid sowing things in the same place again ----'cos you can remember where they were

Best of luck

Good effort! May 1st is not too late for most things. You can still start almost anything off and get a crop apart from chillis that need an earlier start and perhaps garlic. Squash, beans, peas, spuds, can still be put in, even onions could still be started from sets.
