lost 2 hens to a dog attack
« on: April 07, 2010, 10:44 »
I was getting the kids ready this morning when we noticed loads of barking and a truly awful screeching noise from our lovely hens. Looking out the window i noticed next door but ones dog chasing my hens who were having there morning free range around my garden . Obviously i got out as quick as i could but not fast enough to save the 2 he got his teeth into . Its bin day tomorrow so for some reason the neighbour had to put there bin out early and as we have a shared entrance between 3 of us they had to bring it through my yard and all gates were left open so the dog escaped  . Its a truly awful feeling losing hens and i now know how all of you guys who have also lost hens feel .  Its a rather morbid question i know but what do you all do with the bodies .

Double bag and out with the rubbish I'm afraid.

either that or burn them - not nice either way I'm afraid.
So sorry about the loss - it's not the dogs fault - just a shame the neighbour left the gate open, hopefully after this they will remember to close the gate in future.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Not if he has a shared access route Auntie  :( We have shared access here, but thankfully I am the end of the line so no one needs to use my garden to get through. If it is shared you have to allow full access for those neighbouring so no locks allowed.

I'm so sorry that the dog got your girls Craig  :( I hope the neighbour has apologised as really he/she should have made sure he/she shut the gate behind them and if they can't control their dog they should be more careful in future about keeping the dog from your property.

gates locked and we all have  a key as its shared access. im right next to the entrance so 2 other people have to get access on bin day and so on  . my neighbour was almost in tears and has offered to replace them . its just one of them things and weve put it down to a tragic accident . Weve been here 2 years and its the first time this has happened . Double bagging and the bin it is then . luckily bin day 2moz so they wont be around too long . Thank u folks

I understand now Craig.  Bad, sad luck  :(

I didn't know other people's gardens could be a right of way to neighbours.  What a sheltered life I've lead  ::)

How about a spring closer on the gate? something like ... http://www.avenuesupplies.co.uk/index.php?id=931&pid=2544&sid=1
(this was the first site that came up in a search)

We have a right of way through our garden which the neighbours use, they are very good about shutting the gate but every now and then someone forgets.
