Dill
« on: September 24, 2009, 15:12 »
The dill on my allotment is going to seed now, so I cut some fronds today to make a last batch of dill butter.  When I sniffed it before chopping, it smelled and tasted slightly different from normal - couldn't put my finger on it -  but I decided to consign it to the compost.  I wondered if it was because it was going to seed - can anyone confirm this?

Hi Barbarella,

I couldn't comment from personal experience with dill, but I have encountered this sort of late summer characterisitic change in other herbs I have been growing and I also put it down to the plant now being past its best for eating purposes, however I stand here to be corrected.

Sure it wasn't the stink of foxes wee LOL.

I do mine on the windowsill, and outside but I found it goes to seed to quick outside.

Of course you know I mean I do dill on the windowsill not the foxy thing.

Yeuck no - I know what foxes' pee smells like :)

I think I'll go with Lorna's idea about herbs in general.  It makes sense because I think herbs contain essential oils and oils break down over time.  Also things like lettuce taste bitter when they go to seed.

I was just going to say that Barbarella. Everything changes in a plant when it goes to seed so compost is best.
