Moulting?
« on: November 23, 2010, 08:22 »
My Light Sussex Pullet has lost loads of feathers on her neck.  When I first noticed there was a bit of blood so I kept and eye on it and there is now no more fresh blood, just the dried stuff.  Is it ok, or is there a problem?  She has 3 nearly 7 week old chicks, they have quite a few feathers.  Is this normal?  Thanks,

Hi CluckChicken
Don't know about mother hens, but I don't think chx that are moulting normally bleed - mine have lost loads of feathers but they just fall out revealing pink skin underneath which isn't broken.
Could she have been pecked by another chx? If it's the back of her neck that sounds a typical place for another chx to peck her 'into order'.

As new feathers grow they are full of blood, she might have caught it on something or another hen might of given her a peck to make a new feather bleed.

thanks, wasn't sure if it was anything too bad, she hasn't lost anymore feathers yet, just a small patch on her neck.  Don't know what to expect really...

Just keep the purple spray ready  :)  If she bleeds again spray it (avoiding the eyes) to disguise the red colour.  It also acts as an antiseptic.
