Darn it.... is this potato blight
« on: June 28, 2012, 21:47 »
Has been pretty slow coming... noticed some spots on the leaves of my spuds about a week ago. This picture doesn't really do it justice, but I'd say about 50% of the leaves look like this.

Blight? I think I already know the answer...

I'm hoping for your sake that it is just a magnesium deficiency.  A spray with Epsom Salts wouldn't do any harm.
Cheese makes everything better.

If that was blight a week ago, your spuds would probably be brown and mushy now.  When I got it 4 years ago, it only took days for the haulms to rot.

Nasty thing blight!   hope it isn't that!

I don't think it's blight - it doesn't look fungal.
I think Ice is right.

my potato plants leaves turned that colour last season. The experts on my site suggested it was probably the manure i had put on the ground that was infected with that amniro thingy weed killer.
Start at the beginning, and finish at the end!!

Aminopyralid distorts growth.  It doesn't tend to make discolouration.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Mine got magnesium deficiency and looked just like that. I think it was a combination of factors - my soil is very acidic, which can make it difficult for the plants to 'unlock' various nutrients in the soil, also the rain has leached a lot of goodness out of the soil, plus I might have overdone it with a potash-based fertiliser (a plant will often take up potassium at the expense of magnesium).

You can get Epsom Salts at your local garden centre - it's a pretty mainstream product.

If you google 'potato magnesium deficiency images', you'll be able to compare yours with some similar-looking plants...

I'm pretty certain you're all spot on on this - pictures look just like magnesium deficiency. Cheers all.

are those yellow leaves near the bottom of the stem? its just that i've got those yellow leaves with brown spots and i just took them off with ease thinking the lack sunlight down below caused it to be like that. overall the upper leaves are very healthy dark green with budding flowers

Yes, I thought maybe I hadn't registered properly, but obviously had.  I just noticed the dot today in Edinburgh and that's not too far away  :(
