So many ideas. Briliant. Thanks. I particularly like the crowbar in the ground idea. Can I ask why you fill it with water first?

below my lovely loamy soil (thanks Mr Murphy RIP) is yellow river clay that is always wet... the crowbar goes straight through to it and that's where the gurgles happen  :)

Thanks all.  ;)
I'm not sure if the water poured into the hole softens the ground slightly, lubricates the post ,creates some sort of hydraulic pressure or a combination of all 3 but all I know is that it does works :)
I don't just put the pilot a few inches but to the depth I want the stake in the ground.
This way there is less chance of blunting the stake and more importantly, wasting effort ;) :)

Oops. I've just bought a 5ft crowbar on Amazon. The internet is way too easy/dangerous!

Way to go Christo!!! the chisel point on the other end will be useful if you need to dig a post hole as well,

My OH does this (mainly after the odd sherbet) a lot! I think I could make a fortune if I designed and patented a breathalyser device that prevented you from buying online with alcohol on your breath! A bit like that security check from you bank after you enter your details to check it is really you. All bets off if you are over the limit to drive. :D
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
