eglu
« on: June 16, 2009, 17:33 »
Hello!
This is my first post on the poultry pages,am looking into rescuing some ex batt hens and need some honest opinions!
Is the 'eglu' really suitable for 3-4 chickens if they do not have the run of the garden also? I like the fact that it can be moved around onto fresh grass every few days and is easy to keep clean but i dont want to compromise the hens happiness in any way as to me it does look a bit small?
I may well be able to provide them with another bit of garden but if i cant then i need to know if the eglu is still suitable? Many thanks in advance.

My short answer is NO !

My longer answer is:

The eglu with a standard run is only suitable for 2 medium sized hens and in my opinion they need to range around the garden as much as possible during the day and only be shut in the eglu run when there is no one around to keep an eye on them.

The eglu will sleep 3-4 hens but the run would need to have the conversion and extension pieces added.  This makes it impossible to move easily.

You can do what I'm about to do and build a larger run to put the eglu into.

The benefits of the eglu over wood are obvious as cleaning takes about 10 mins once a month and the eglu is then absolutely clean with no nasties lurking in cracks and crevices. Double skinned makes it warm in winter and cool in summer.

The other problem is that hens are addictive and you won't have space for anymore!
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

I rather like them but couldn't afford one and now got too many chooks to have one or even an eglu cube  :D, the only downside (apart from the cost) is that they are very attractive to thieves.
Staffies are softer than you think.

For me that's good Kate - my garden is only big enough for two hens.  It would become a wasteland with any more.

And that's what they are good for - people with limited space.
