Title: Old Stored Garlic
Post by: Eblana on September 05, 2012, 11:26
I was clearing out the garage yesterday and found a bunch of my saved Garlic from my 2011 harvest (must have fallen down from where I had it hanging on the roof).  It looks to be in very good condition and I am just wondering if it would still be ok to use a seed for planting in autumn?

If the individual cloves still feel fairly solid you can always give it a try. Often they'll look good but turn out to be hollow since they really are non-keepers.  To be on the safe side, I'd also plant a few newly purchased/saved cloves.

In October I intend to plant some elephant garlic that has been in my shed since last year. If it doesn't grow only the effort of digging a few holes will be lost.

I decided not to plant any last October because, although it looks wonderful when lifted, it's not my favourite crop. If the saved ones grow my son will be in for a treat as he loves it for stir-fry... I think I'll wait and see before I tell him.  ;)
