Hi all

I do realise that this may be a bit of a numpty question, but how do I know when the 'last frost' or 'after all risk of frost' has arrived?

hi hawthorne,  welcome to the site.

it depends on where you live, but generally May would see the last of the frosts -  early may if you're in the far south, or maybe late may in the north.

Hope this helps

Thank you :-)

I kept finding all sorts of info about the USA, but none for here. I'm in the south west so I'll guess at early May.

A good average time is the beginning of June.

If you plant frost tender things out a bit earlier than that you can protect them with fleece if there is frost forecast  :D

When I lived in the quaint fishing village of Bognor Regis (Right on the south coast between Portsmouth and Brighton) most of the allotment holders reckoned to wait until the end of May for the last frost. Of course, I ignored them in my first year of growing, being far to impatient................. The next year I listened very carefully.

I find the Gardenaction web site to be very useful. Tell it your nearest town here and then it will give suggested planting etc dates for each plant.
But of course that's only based on historical records of first and last frost dates. You also need to keep an eye on weather forecasts; here's a few web sites I use:
BBC 5 day forecast here
BBC Monthly outlook here
BBC Gardening Weather here
Weather.co.uk 10 day forecast here

See what you make of this link.

http://www.overthegardengate.net/garden/frostsurvey.asp

Can't vouch fully for accuracy but it seems ok for where I am in the sunny south!

Cheers HH
Keep digging

Geography not my strong point.
I could have done with some towns and cities on it to guess where I am :!:
