Large Beetroot
« on: February 01, 2012, 22:58 »
A while ago I was watching an episode of the Great British Food Revival on it Antonio Carluccio did a piece on Beetroot he showed a very large Beetroot variety which I was certain was called either Beefheart or Bullsheart. I have looked the on the internet through every seed catalogue that's arrived and found nothing.

Please could someone help me my wife's told me I dreamt it!!

Bull's Bood is certainly a variety of beetroot that springs to mind, however it is commonly used as salads.

Beetroot generally does not come that huge, if she thinks you had a dream, she might have a point.

Honest!!

Now, that makes sense. Way past the general and customary growing season, most will come like that. Only good for roasting.

You didn't dream it, don't worry!

We have beetroot that big, from a variety called cylinindra, which are not round of course

From a sowing mid May they were huge in September, and we ate the last ones two weeks ago.

Flavour is excellent and they were not woody at all.  Roasted them in chunks with the potatoes for Sunday dinner  :D :D :D

Easy enough to find the variety -- lots stock it

The Bulls Blood get big if you let them. The foliage is gorgeously large and glossy and cuts quite a dash on the plot.

I prefer to eat them smaller but I grow so many beets that I can afford to let some of the bulls blood ones grow on as feature plants

Fairly large beets are rather tough eating. When my mother's beets get too large, she sends them to her neighbour, who feeds them to his less fussy beef cows. I use a few to boil for juice to make a sweet beet jelly recipe.

Funnily enough our huge cylindras were sweet and juicy when roasted.

We were quite surprised the first year  :D

Perhaps it's the variety, Sunny. I grow Bull's Blood, mum grows Detroit Red.
