How Many Hens
« on: March 15, 2007, 14:08 »
Okay, please can someone advise me of how many hens I can successfully keep in the new coop and house I have built.  The house is 3' x 3' x 4'6" and the run is 9' x 6' x 6'.  The hen house which stands on legs 20" off the ground, has 4 internal nest boxes.

We are thinking of 8 Hens with a mix of ISO Warrens, Sussex and Road Island Reds.  Comments and thoughts from those of you with experience would be greatly appreciated.

Much thanks

A 6' x 4' shed will accommodate 12 - 15 hens. So 3' x3' should be okay for 4 - 6 hens depending on their size.  4 nesting boxes would be plenty for them  :!:

the breeds are biggish birds so cramping would be werse and even 2 nest boxes would be a squash ... disagreeing with aunty sally can be dangeroos

RM said he has 4 nest boxes Munty

Big birds would be good for meat, but medium sized are fine for eggs  :!:
