Guinea pigs and hens
« on: March 14, 2007, 21:56 »
I'm picking up some young guinea pigs on friday. Do you think they could go in the same run as the hens ? or will it be guinea pig for lunch. I've seen hens corner and kill mice, so not sure if it's a good idea or not.

Ooo, I wouldn't put piggies in with hens. The guineas are nervous creatures as it is, without being bullied by hens. If you are keeping your guineas together in a little group, you may notice that one guinea will go into "open country", at a time to feed on grass etc... The others will hide indoors till its safe. Well thats what my 2 do anyway. :D . They also make a really lovely cooing sound to each other, the sound comes from right down in their bellies, I think they do it when they are contented?
Peas out!

I wouldnt put them together, even if they dont eat them (and as Munty says, theyre a tasty meal) they could well trample them.

Put the piggies in a run of their own, but if you put it close to the chooks run the piggies will eventually become inquisitive and go over for a 'chat'

i dont have the chooks yet, still working on their housing, but i have at present two piggies and a wabbit, seeing how its a very sunny day today i think they can go in there run while im digging  :D

We don't have chooks but do have two g-piggies - I'd be inclined to keep them separate from the chooks in case they got trampled on or pecked.

Piggies make wonderful pets - our elderly Patches (soon to be 6) has unexpectedly made a full recovery from her op in early Feb (in which most of her insides were removed, including the biggest tumour the vet had ever come across in a piggy!).  We've been completely amazed by her stubborn determination that her time isn't up yet.

Now we just need to get the garden back fence replaced, then when it's warmer we'll once again be watching 'piggy tv' from the living room  :)

Got a guinea pig living with 2 rabbits, but rabbit no 3 "grazes2 with the chickens. He has gone misisng twice this week after dark, only to be found bedding down in the hen house.
Co-habitting is not allowed so he gets forcibly removed back to his own hutch - till breakfast time.

I hate to tell ya, eggs/legs, but you've got 2 wabbits grazing with these chooks.  Love the picture!
