fat necked onions : will they store
« on: May 24, 2008, 19:04 »
hi all, i have some white and red onions which i planted from sets last late autumn. they are doinf really well and the bulbs are starting to fatten but i see they have quite thick necks (around 1").

i've read somewhere that if the necks are too thick they won't store, as i've got a lot of them i just wondered if 1" is too thich for storage? if so, i think i'll start eating them now rather than have a huge glut in a months or so time :D

or will the necks reduce in size once the bulbs fatten up more?

Winter/Japanese onions are not good storers in any case. They are a good 'filler in' before your spring planted ones are ready.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm going to start pulling mine now. They are not full size yet, but reasonable enough.

The others will still be growing whilst the first few get pulled & I'll be blowed, (polite term), if I'm going to buy them whilst these are sitting there.

Yes I know there will be a few smarty pants with stored ones from last year still!

I'd have doubted that. I'm pulling my winter ones, too.

I have some stored but them useless other than some greens in a salad.
