Away for a few days and bang - a late frost while my back was turned!  Lost all my beans (sob :() and the potato tops are gonners.  Couldn't have heaped them up any more.

So the question is - do I take the frosted tops off to stop any rot going down to the tuber, or just leave them for the new growth to come through?  Some books and websites say one thing, some the other.  What do you think??

I watered my frosted spuds(whilst they had frost on) and cut the blackened leaves off, and the haulms just continued to grow.

They'll all push through Madcat, just a bit later...

So 'first earlies' become 'second earlies', and you'll be a happy person in no time at all!

You can still re-plant some beans too, again, they'll just be a bit later, but that may turn out to be a good thing if we have a 'funny' summer!

One year we still had runners going in November, and were sick of them by then...

You are all perfectly correct!  :)  The later spuds (Charlottes) are now ahead as they had little damage and the Kestrels have picked up nicely.  The runners have been restarted, as have the french beans and borlottis.  Everything else is thriving (inc dandelions and chickweed)  so the days of despair are behind us.

Thank you for your support when I was well down.

Charlottes last for ages, Madcat.

We bagged all ours up a couple of years ago, and they were still going well into the New Year!

Silly really, we should have used them in their prime, but it was a rare year, so we now take things as they come, because one year they won't...

Glad to hear all is feeling better for you now - we get like that, then after a few days things just get better!

I've been known to dig them up in March  ::)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
