What can I use old fence panels and posts for?
« on: April 05, 2013, 09:45 »
I am about to replace eight 6ft X 6ft fence panels and nine 6ft wooden fence posts with a new fence. The posts are in good condition so I am sure I can use them, but what about the fence panels themselves? The bottom 8"-12" on each one is rotten and some of the tops are not that good. I dont think they will be any good for edging a raised bed as they are too fragile. I am sure there is something I can use them for/build with them. Any ideas?
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

A compost bin that won't last very long, but might tide you over if you need one. Have you got an allotment? You could make a pot store or dumping ground but a bit posher?

tack some thicker wood along 12" from the bottom either side, then trim under that off, do the same at the top and you will have some 4' panels to make a fence at the plot, chop a couple of foot off the bottoms of the posts to remove any rotten wood and you have posts too.

Thanks all.
Grendel - I never thought of cutting the top and bottom off. What a brilliant idea

just remember to put new tops and bottoms on before you cut, otherwise thew will fall to bits.

paint them white and use them as light reflectors for all the poor sods at the back of your plot, especially if you're using beds, might wanna cut them down too as previously said.

have a good one

I just cut my old post down and they now support a rope on the boundary of my plot, and the panels I cut into sections and I'm making a small mono pitched store with 3 shelves for the allotment. another one had ended up as a short narrow panel that fills the gap between my shed and wall where I did have an old pallet.

I broke up some panels to use the wood to repair others, and batten that's left will become wooden pegs etc.
