Netting
« on: August 17, 2021, 13:29 »
Hello wise gardeners!

What netting do you all use please so that birds don't get trapped in it? We had a little sparrow trapped the other year and it broke my heart.  We managed to free it, but there was still some round its foot and I don't think it would have been able to fly.  This has put me off netting but obviously you need something to keep the pests off!  Thanks for your help.

I find scaffolding netting useful for all sorts of jobs. And it's never trapped wildlife here.

it depends what your going to use your net for we use scaffold netting for some coverings to stop pigeons on the crops but there no good for insects so we use enviromesh for brassicas carrots and other crops never had any probs with birds getting trapped maybe because its smaller mesh?

As long as your netting is smaller than birds, and fixed down firmly at the bottom and at each end, then the birds should stay safely outside.
Most of the netting I use is 7mm mesh, nowadays. It keeps birds and butterflies out but lets good insects in (to eat whitefly etc) I have a few enviromesh sheets just for carrots because carrotfly is really tiny, as is onion/leek moth if you get those in your location.

I think it helps that the netting (whatever type) is held taut and no creases.  Cheers,  Tony. :)
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !
