hi , this is my first year of growing mint in a pot, over the last week it has died back and the foliage has dropped off . is this normal at this time of year ? thanks

Yes. Just leave it alone and it'll come back next year. Don't cut the bare stems back - just let be.

Being such a rampant spreader in open ground, mint can tend to choke itself and start to struggle when confined to a pot (if you tip it out you'll find a 3-4" deep tangled mass of roots and shoots at the top, with the soil underneath.)

I aim to re-pot my two varieties of mint every spring using just a couple of pieces of root with shoots on, but in reality it's usually more like every other year.  ::)

I have always grown mint from a scrap of root , it just romps away !

Tried growing it from seed this year ..............zilch, nada not a sign !

Must get sis to put a bit of root in with this years festival card ! :)

A few weeks ago I emptied a pot of mint, took out some good roots, then re-planted in a big plastic pot about 2 foot across. They seem to be doing well so far.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
