I have got Charlotte potatoes which are supposed to be ready at Christmas.  I think they go in the planters in mid August.  What is the best way to store them.  Are they better in the light then dark.  I think August is when they should go in.

Like a lot of people I've never had any success with Christmas potatoes so I don't bother. In theory if you keep the tubers cool (think salad drawer of the fridge) they should refrain from sprouting but this didn't work for me either. Then you have to think about giving the plants some protection as any frost will kill them.

Personally I'd stick with the traditional roasties at Christmas.

I guess if you have a conservatory you could grow them in containers and then bring them inside when the frosts start.

I just cut hallam down when potatoes are ready and cover them with extra soil initially, then when likelyhood of frost I cover them with old carpet or straw etc and leave in situ until required.    When Christmas eve comes I uncover potatoes and dig up, always delicious results, as the taste of new potatoes at Christmas is to die for.  Never has this failed me, therefore I do not bother in August.  Bay Laurel

Alan Titchmarsh harvests them and puts some in a biscuit tin and reburies them, ready for Christmas :D
