I have just taken over a 10 rod allotment that has not been used for at least a year.  The earth is thick with bindweed and couch grass.
Where do I start (apart from digging)?
Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

Hello and Welcome, Pea Brain
You'll find some help in the article section, I hope.

If you've got bindweed and couch everywhere, then I'd consider a chemical clear using glyphosphate.  I much prefer organic methods but if you want the plot productive this coming year and don't fancy digging then I can see no other way.

Do remember, using more weedkiller than suggested is no more effective, just more expensive.

Allow time for the poison to be taken down to the roots and kill the plants before you cultivate.

As for digging, well it depends on your soil but I'd consider a thorough dig over to start - I put some thoughts up  on  No Dig  in the articles.

Good Luck and a happy Christmas to you.
