Title: aprox 4lbs of satsumas.. non edible but not off
Post by: juliec on January 25, 2011, 23:15
my daughjter in law bought a a load of satsumas (which the kids love) but when she peeled them they were dryand not edible. Is theer any thing we can do with them i.e marmalade: make them into a "pectin" for next year?? etc or are they just for the compsit heap.

Any help appreciated.

If you like the flavour of marmalade there is something you can do with them. If you look up River cottage compost heap jelly, that's what I did with all my wizened citrus and apples and pears which would have gone in the compost bin otherwise. Makes a lovely fresh shredless marmalade.
As for other marmalade, sorry, can't help as I don't make it.

I'd try mixing some of them with a juicy grape fruit and lemons, say 3lbs in total, half sats, half grapefruit and lemons and make a batch of marmalade.  I think it would be OK.  If  you like it make another batch. :)  I've used sats in marmalade and they give a nice different flavour.   :)

Pour some orange juice ( mixed with some booze if you like ) sprinkle with cinnamon, cover with foils and bake in the oven.  Serve with some cream or ice cream - Lovely..

I've noticed an increasing number of 'oranges' that are as dry as a witches whatsit !  Next time I'm taking them back !       Cheers,   Tony.
