I've got 2 melon plants in the greenhouse, they're doing really well, very big and lots and lots of flowers.  But, do I need to pollinate them by hand? I grew melons a couple of years ago, they did produce fruit but I can't remember if I hand pollilnated or not! Memory like a sieve :tongue2:
2 German Shepherds, Kira & Bruin, 4 hybrid chicks Chryssie, Violet, Sweet Pea and Astra.

Erm, yes you are better to pollinate by hand... just take the male flower off, then rub it inside the female

i am being really daft but i cant see the difference between the flowers so not sure which to pollinate any help would be great

iv never grown melons but if there like pumpkins then the female should have somethink like a round ball behind the flower and male shouyld just be a flower

Yes..as pumpkin patch says..the female flowers have a little swelling behind the flower where the fruit develops.

My melon flowered for 2-3 weeks with just male flowers. I thought I was missing the difference. The female ones were obvious when they did turn up though.
