Unwanted spuds appearing....
« on: May 09, 2013, 18:36 »
Evening all, I have unwanted spuds appearing next to and through where I planted my rhubarb.

Can I just hoe them off, or will it take more to defeat them?
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Thems be volunteers. Are you able to gently furtle around & get the seed potato out otherwise just pull off the shoot until it stops shooting.

They will keep sending shoot's up , as they can harbour over wintering blight spores i would reall try digging them up.

Just pull out or hoe off the shoots as best you can if you can't get down to the tuber - don't worry about it, it happens to most people who've grown spuds and no-one's been locked up for starting a UK blight epidemic as far as I know!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Yeah, I'll just keep doing that Jay.

I guess they have to die eventually.

Try painting a bit of glyphosate onto the shoots - unless you're vehemently opposed to using it!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It won't happen.

What you paint/spray on is only absorbed by the plant itself.

I can spot weed the lawn with it without killing any grass.

OK, I have Resolva, which is Westlands version of Glyphosate I believe, or it's GLY based, anyhow.

Would this be the same, and become redundant upon touching the soil?

We have spuds popping up in a bed we haven't used for spuds since 2009 how does that happen

We have dug that bed more times than I have made my own so how can you miss them.

Mind you 2009 was the year hubby put my spuds in some 4 foot deep, they showed their faces eventually lol

His answer was the deeper the more potatoes  ::)

I had a similar problem with Jerusalem Artichokes under my new asparagus bed last year. If you keep pulling the shoots they get the idea eventually. There's only so much energy in the tubers.

My potatoes failed completely last year because of the cold and wet, but they've got the cheek to have started coming up now!  in the middle of my garlic!
