I have a tree located on the plot for veg but previous there where alot of shrubs millions of tiny roots every where, my question is should I spray to ensure they never return if so how near to a small tree should I go as I don't wish to kill the tree.

If you're using round up, then providing you don't get any spray on the leaves of the tree, you can spray as close as you want.
but DO be very carefull regarding any "drift"
