Hello from the fens
« on: March 13, 2019, 07:04 »
We've just taken on our first allotment as we never seem to have quite enough room in the veg plot at home. The fen soil looks incredible - my brother was saying you could throw down dogs teeth and grow dogs there! Which is great as me and my husband have very little experience. Got myself off to the wrong kind of flying start by falling over in a dark car park two days ago - I'm hoping I'll be good for work by tomorrow as a friend who's moving house has said I can take her young fruit bushes and rhubarb. I don't imagine it's a good idea to be moving them so late but it's worth a try. Just trying to get a rough plan and to do list together in my head while my knee is keeping me at home - very exciting but just a little bit scary too:)

Hello and welcome  :D

Your soil sounds amazing, and as you say, is an excellent start!

re: the fruit bushes. There is still just about time to move them before their leaves come out, but keep them well watered through this coming Summer. Rhubarb though, if it is already growing (and mine is) might be best left until it is dormant... be warned, those roots can be very deep

Welcome Ethel,

Hope you're fit soon!

If you don't move the fruit bushes now you'll never know it it would have been successful.   ;)

I have moved rhubarb in July in 30C and they sat in black bin bags, no probs.
Move and put in and if it looks like snow then cover with soil

Hi there & I hope you recover from your injuries very soon. I’m sure with the weather we are having you will ge5 away with the late transplanting if you treat them kindly for the rest of this year & in the case of the rhubarb next as well, I think a lot of people struggle with rhubarb because they don’t consider what type of root system it has & pick too soon. Don’t pick any this year & none or only a tiny few stems next to give it time to grow some more of those huge roots.

Welcome to the site :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
