« on: September 26, 2007, 13:11 »
im starting to build my rased beds

my aim is to grow carrots in them, when it comes to filling them up with soil.

what soil do carrots like? im thinking i may have to mix something into my garden soil, i didnt know if fen top / black soil was a good way to go?

thanks

i had a read of that munty, it was helpfull.

but as im starting fresh i m trying to find the ideal soil to grow carrots in. i know they grow carroys out in the fens so was just thinking that some fen black soil mixed 50-50 with my garden soil should get me somewhere near.

i was also advised that carroys  like sandy soil and to mix some starp sand in to but the guy had been wrong on most things he has told me so ive lost faith in his hints and tips now

He is right about the sharp sand.  Incorporate into the beds as you raise them.  Remove any large stones from soil added.  Old compost / growbag contents is good.  No manure.

at last he knows something :D

i was going to run the soil through my old coal sive to clear the stones

ive also just found a sits that says carrots will do well in sandy loam soil so think it may be worth getting a few bags and mixing it in

I agree with them, add lots of sand, and till in as deeply as possible. Carrots will go deep looking for water if it's dry next year. If they can't penetrate the lower layers, they fork. And stone clearing is highly advised.
