Garlic : Solent Wight
« on: August 31, 2011, 10:23 »
Hello all,

I planted Solent Wight garlic this spring which were sucessful although smallish bulbs. Is it possible to sow this variety in the autumn and maybe get larger bulbs by harvesting time? The original bulbs that I bought and separated  into cloves for planting from the seed catalogue were about twice the size of the ones I harvested. Seems a good variety for flavour and the bulbs have dried well. Look forward to your thoughts. Thanks

Others will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that all garlic can be planted in Autumn. Not only that but I think they should be Autumn planted a. to give them a cold spell while growing and b. to give them a good long time in the ground.

After one poor result (like yours) with spring planting, I always over winter mine now.

Cheers.

I agree with JohnB47 - always plant mine in October rather than wait until spring. The winter cold does something that helps them bulk up the next year.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

My spring planted garlic was also a failure & I thought it had all died, all the foliage went brown.
I left them in the ground because I thought they were dead.

Over the last couple of weeks they have all sprouted new growth,  :) I dug one up to take a look. It's still a single clove, but now round & about 15mm in diameter.

I'll leave it in & see what happens.

Softneck garlic (and Solent White is one) should be planted in the autumn for the best results, and the cold of the winter will encourage vernalisation (splitting into cloves) as it grows.

Hardneck garlic should ideally be planted in the spring, but in time to get a cold snap.

Softnecks Hardnecks * grow a nice long flowering shoot called a scape, which you can also eat  :D

* Thanks DD  :lol:

Thought it was hardnecks that did that?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for all your replies.

I will definitely be planting my solent wight in the autumn then, and look forward to a bumber crop next year!!!! I did get some nice bulbs that split into cloves but just a bit on the small side, so not a complete failure as such.
